The Walk in 12 Steps
Zendi’s 12 Steps to Train Your Dog to Walk Calmly Beside You
Step 1: Introduce the Slip Lead Gently
Let your dog get familiar with the Zendi slip lead by holding the collar section open and using a treat to encourage them to put their head through. This builds a positive association and helps them feel comfortable wearing it. Start your training in a quiet, low-distraction environment to help them get accustomed to the lead.
Step 2: Choose the Right Tool – The Zendi Slip Lead
Once the lead is on, ensure it’s fitted high on your dog’s neck, just behind the ears, to give you gentle control and improve communication during walks. Slide the nylon stopper into place to secure the collar section and prevent your dog from backing out. The lead should come straight through the collar ring over your dog’s neck toward you, allowing it to release after corrections. If the lead comes from under the neck or bends through the ring, it may tighten without releasing properly, which is crucial for an effective correction.
Step 3: Stay Calm and Lead by Example
Dogs mirror their owners’ energy, so ensure you remain calm and confident before starting the walk. A relaxed demeanour sets the tone for the training session.
Step 4: Set Boundaries at the Start
Before beginning the walk, have your dog sit calmly beside you. The walk should only start when your dog is calm and paying attention to you.
Step 5: Create Focus Before Moving
Use a cue like “Let’s go” to gain your dog’s focus before starting the walk. Keeping their attention early on helps prevent pulling and distractions.
Step 6: Keep the Lead Short but Relaxed
Hold the Zendi slip lead with slight slack—loose but short. A relaxed lead allows your dog to learn to walk calmly without pulling or feeling restrained.
Step 7: Walk with Purpose and Correct Early
Walk confidently with a clear direction, ensuring your dog stays by your side. If your dog begins to pull, stop walking immediately to show that pulling won’t get them anywhere. For early correction, give a quick, gentle upward tug on the slip lead, and release the tension right away. This teaches your dog that pulling is unacceptable, allowing them to move forward only when they are calm.
Step 8: Practice Door and Gate Etiquette
Teach your dog to sit and wait calmly at doors or gates. Only proceed when they are calm and attentive. This reinforces your leadership and prevents them from rushing ahead.
Step 9: Reward Good Behaviour Immediately
When your dog walks calmly by your side, reward them with praise or a small treat. Positive reinforcement encourages them to stay close and maintain good behaviour.
Step 10: Use Redirection, Not Force
If your dog gets distracted or starts pulling, redirect their focus by turning in the opposite direction. This gentle technique helps bring their attention back to you without using excessive force.
Step 11: Introduce Distractions Gradually
Once your dog reliably walks beside you in a quiet setting, slowly introduce distractions like other people or dogs. Continue rewarding calm behaviour and correcting pulling to keep them focused.
Step 12: Be Consistent and Patient
Consistency is key to successful training. Practice daily using the same commands and corrections. With time, patience, and repetition, your dog will learn to walk calmly beside you using the Zendi slip lead.
By following these 12 steps with the Zendi training slip lead, you’ll build a strong foundation for calm, controlled, and enjoyable walks with your dog.
